CLEVELAND, Ohio – It looks bad.

That’s the underlying message from Major League Baseball after it announced Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz will be out of action at least until Aug. 31.

The exact wording of the news was this: “MLB and the MLBPA have agreed to extend Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz’s non-disciplinary paid leave through games of Aug. 31 while MLB continues its investigation.”

MLB is looking into concerns that Ortiz intentionally threw two pitches for balls so that someone could win bets. Yes, you can bet that a certain pitch in a certain inning will be a ball or strike.

  2. We knew this was going to happen. Usually the microbets have very low bet limits because usually the lines are really extreme. My guess is that this investigation has gone past these two incidents and they’ve discovered way more irregularities.

  3. It would be interesting to hear about how these type of activities are tracked in sports.
PS — How often does this pitcher throw a non-competitive pitch? Statistically significant or not?
PS2 — you have to wonder if microbets are in the best interest of MLB and other sports.

  4. So don’t allow micro bets. But they are greedy fucks.

  5. Who cares, gambling companies shouldn’t offer micro bets if they don’t want the risk.

  6. One person investigated last year, two this year, I hope that’s it, but we’ll see….

  7. yet Ohtani never missed a game

    • timing mattered, but yes, you’re correct

  8. I’ve already made the “you jump in a mud puddle you’re going to get dirty” analogy too many times. Of course stuff like this was going to happen. Of course it was going to escalate. Of course not everyone has ready-made fall-guys Ohtani had, guys they can roll out on cue to take the hit. Sports, college and pro, made a calculated decision that they could increase their profit margin if they cozied up with the gamblers. I guess they figured people are gonna bet anyway so why not get in on the action. As I’ve said before, there was a reason Kennesaw Mountain Landis ordered the teams to shut down all the illegal betting outlets operating in the shady underbelly of the ballparks. Suspending players wasn’t enough.

The sad thing is, fans are already starting to tune out, either because they are tired of the onscreen gambling graphics or they figure games are being fixed. Once that vibe is in the zeitgeist it can’t be turned off. I gotta believe there is more to the story where this pitcher is concerned, more concrete evidence than a couple of suspicious pitches. Someone knows something. Like I have been saying, expect more of this in the future, not less. Gambling is a dirty business but it’s a very profitable dirty business and as soon as state after state starting sticking their grubby political fingers into the mud pie it was just a matter of time before the sports leagues got on board as well. Thank you Brodie for reporting on this stuff, sadly, you are the exception, not the norm.

  9. Someone definitely blew the whistle on this guy. Nobody is tracking every pitch of every game that’s insane

  10. Most states embraced gambling simply as another way to get tax dollars, same reason they want soft drugs they can tax it. What did they think was going to happen when they started all these prop bets. States and the MLB should ban any kind of prop bets related to single players. Too much temptation for stuff like this to happen.

  11. So, just how much does Manfred owe Vegas?

    • Or, maybe the question is “How much did buying themselves a Manfred, cost Vegas?”

  12. The leagues and media outlets promote gambling…..

  13. I think players fighting the gambling industry, and insisting on the right to pitch their own damn game, should be praised.

  14. Maybe all the gambling on each pitch, play, ball and strike, is the problem.

    • Prop bets on individuals are the issue, those should be banned.
