After a lengthy appeals process, Major League Baseball on Monday has fired umpire Pat Hoberg for “sharing” legal sports betting accounts with a friend who bet on baseball and for intentionally deleting messages key to the investigation into his conduct.
MLB said Hoberg “adamantly denied betting on baseball directly or indirectly,” with commissioner Rob Manfred saying there was “no evidence” that Hoberg directly bet on games or manipulated the outcomes of any games “in any way.”
In its statement, MLB said it fired Hoberg for failing to “uphold the integrity of the game” and that he “should have known” that his friend — a professional poker player — had bet on baseball from the shared account.

“sports betting” to me is a redundant statement. as a spectator it allows fans to get involved in the game with the anticipation of a win or loss to add to their viewing excitement(and lets face it – mlb can use some excitement) that being said sports gambling has become so insidious that like many risky behaviors it has become normalized in society so why think twice about it ?
How many teams will be broadcast on the FanDuel network this year. Sports are no longer legitimate anymore, take the Super Bowl also known as the where is Taylor Swift special.
All sports are going bonkers on betting. Can’t watch a game without tons of gambling commercials.
Kudos to MLB for remembering the horror of 1919, and to continue to put integrity & honor of the game over profit.
And the commercial logo on the umpire’s uniform “FTX”, the bankrupt cryptocurrency company of Sam Bankman-Fried who is a guest of the Federal Penal System.

I’m pretty sure I read that MLB allows them to bet, but only on other sports besides baseball.
Brodie I have said it before and I will say it again. You need to get Michael Lewis on your channel and ask him questions about sports betting and gambling. His podcast is covering sports gambling and it’d be a nice shocker to everyone just to hear how deep everything goes. Love the videos and love the content.
Also, a shared sports betting account has way too much leeway for both of them to communicate and let’s say it wasn’t Hoberg betting but his friend but let’s say hoberg tells another umpire “first pitch is going to be a strike” he misses one call and gets the rest perfect the rest of the game that’s still a 99% rate
6:00: The Athletic says he opened an account in his name after attending an MLB meeting where umpires were instructed not be involved “with others” in placing bets. It seems the light bulb went off in his head that he had a problem. It was also after that when he started deleting emails.
“MLB’s release states that Hoberg opened the Sportsbook A account under his own name after attending an MLB training instructing umpires not to have others place bets on their behalf or to place bets indirectly on behalf of others.”
Sports betting is going to be the ruination of pro sports. Whether this ump was betting on baseball or not, there is “smoke”. As far as his reinstatement timeline allowing possible reinstatement in the spring of 2026, we have to remember that this was an ump with very high marks and he was pulled from umpiring in 2024, so it will be 2 years before he is eligible to be reinstated. This is an umpire that is/was obviously well liked and it sounds like he will be back umpiring games beginning in 2026.
